Overview of Operation Trash Compactor Program

COXSWAINS & FACILITY OWNERS

NEW, IMPROVED PROCESS:

Click here to select Patrol Areas and view vessels due to be visited. Then select specific vessels and print information currently on the database for them.

NOTE: Vessels that have been visited will not be displayed again until they need to be re-visited, according to criteria established by Sector Seattle Incident Management Division (IMD).

PLEASE remember to take up to three digital photos of each vessel visited and email them in with visit forms. NOTE: Send the photos in the .jpg format in which they come out of the camera. DO NOT put them into a Microsoft Word document. Also, be sure to save a copy of your forms and photos in case they are not received by the data managers and need to be resubmitted.

As soon as possible after the visit, email, mail or fax all forms and digital photos to:

DEFINITION OF A DERELICT VESSEL:   A vessel of any size that potentially could be any of the following:

  • Pollution Hazard - It could contain fuel, oil, or hazmat - has an engine, could contain a fuel tank, or has visible barrels or other containers of unknown substances.)
  • Hazard to Navigation - Adrift, moored in an area of active vessel traffic, or moored in such a way that it seems likely to become adrift (rotten lines or not well secured).
  • Public Safety Hazard - Easily accessible to the public, likely to attract visitors, or containing possible hazardour materials.
There is no need to report boats that are resting above the high-water line or are old ribs lying on the beach.

Program Overview

Sector Seattle responds to oil spills from derelict, abandoned, or neglected vessels in its AOR. In an attempt to reduce these incidents, Sector has asked the Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist it in evaluating and monitoring those vessels, visiting them by water. This is a permanent, ongoing part of Auxiliary boat operations tasking within the Sector Seattle AOR, including portions that operate under orders from Group Port Angeles. (More...)
